Three brands, one Magento 2 migration

Senior lead on moving three large-catalogue brands from Magento 1 to Magento 2, with custom modules, indexer optimisation and customer migration.

Platform:
  • Client Group of three specialist retail brands
  • Platform Magento 2 (migrated from Magento 1)
  • My role Senior lead developer
  • Focus Multi-brand build, large catalogues, migration

The project

A business running three online brands, each with a large catalogue, moved from Magento 1 to Magento 2. I was senior lead on the build for all three stores.

What I built

  • Custom modules for product collections, checkout enhancements and layered navigation.
  • Indexer optimisation for large catalogues, so catalogue updates didn’t slow the stores down.
  • Magento 1 to Magento 2 customer migration, so existing customers could keep their accounts.
  • Google Analytics Enhanced Ecommerce tracking across the stores.
  • Ongoing support: real-time support, bug fixes and resolving Magento core issues after launch.

The lesson

With several brands on one platform, every custom module is reused three times, so building it properly once matters three times as much. Large catalogues also expose slow indexing and inefficient queries quickly, which makes performance a design concern from the start, not a clean-up task at the end.
